PHOENIX -- Here at 3TV we've been welcoming babies left and right. Last week we met Kaley's baby Karsen, and just before that, it was Ryan's baby, Jameson.
Well, just in time for Father's Day, we wanted to put Ryan's daddy skills to the test. So we sent him to a Daddy Boot Camp at Banner Desert Medical Center.
The "Just for Dads" class allows new fathers to gain confidence about handling everything from diapers to bath time and naps. It also includes lessons about how becoming a dad will make you a stronger man and how having a family makes all your efforts and sacrifices worthwhile.
"One of the main goals of the class is to have dads relax and bond with the baby," says Dr. Saba.
Dr. Norm Saba is the class instructor. He's is also a father and pediatrician. He covers issues including how to get involved and stay involved, great ways to bond with your baby, and ways to calm a crying infant. Dads also have fun with a diaper derby challenge.
Dr. Saba says you'd be surprised at how many new dads don't know the first thing about changing diapers. "In the hospital, when we see new babies, I like the dad to change the first diaper," he says.
New dad Scott says the class really helped him. "We got prepared," he says. "I change diapers, I know how to do it, how to feed him. Just about anything that comes up I can do it."
Just for Dads is offered every other month. It runs for two hours in the evening, 6 p.m.-8 p.m. The cost is $25.
