PEORIA, Ariz. -- Peoria police killed a young mountain lion Tuesday night after it spent the evening stalking people and pets.

People living in the neighborhood near Lake Pleasant Parkway and Happy Valley Road are used to encounters with wildlife, but it's rare to have a predator come into their yards.

Officers from the Arizona Game and Fish Department were also on scene. Peoria police said the lion was acting abnormally and they feared it was rabid.

The mountain lion jumped tall block walls to get into the yards after sunset.

"We were watching TV and all of a sudden a pair of bright green eyes was staring at us," Rebekah Coleman said.

The lion sat at their back glass door for a while before moving on to their neighbor's yard.

Coleman called 911, fearing what the lion would do to the neighbors' children or puppies. Luckily, all were inside. Still, their home video shows the lion circling the dog cages and hissing.

"We're used to bobcats, sure," she said. "But this thing wanted our dogs. It wanted us. It had no fear."

Game and Fish took the animal away for rabies testing.
