PHOENIX -- A 7-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was found at the bottom of a backyard pool in Phoenix Tuesday afternoon.

Phoenix police and fire departments responded to the home near 60th Street and Bell Road at about 2 p.m.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department, the child was swimming with four other children ranging in age from 5 to 11 and three adults were on site.

The child is not a strong swimmer and was using "water wings" to assist him, according to a spokesman with the Phoenix Fire Department.

The children had been swimming for several hours and took a lunch break. When they got back in the pool, the boy was found at the bottom of the shallow end without the wings.

It is not clear how long he was underwater.

A responding police officer began CPR until paramedics arrived.

The boy was not breathing when he was rushed to a hospital by an ambulance.
