PHOENIX  -- We all know what happens when things pile up around us, but clutter is more than what we collect on our desks and in our closets.

Clutter also includes unhealthy relationships, mismanaged money and over-parented kids.

Now, two Glendale life coaches, Sherry and Lindon Gareis, have penned a book called "Declutter Now!" This 248 page-turner was written to help us clear all kinds of "life" clutter for good.

The authors say negative clutter can invade and affect every area of our lives.

"I think it can hit you heart, mind, body and soul," says Lindon Gareis. "And when that hits you that hard, it controls every area of your life."

On Friday's Good Morning Arizona they shared five key takeaways from the book that we can all do today to feel better for a lifetime.

1. Declutter More Than Your Closets
It takes a comprehensive approach, decluttering every area of your life. It's not just about physical clutter, but the clutter that invades your heart, mind, body and home.

"You remove the unwanted," says Sherry. "Then it leaves space to replace it with the things that are most important to you."

2.  Say "No" Often
Decluttering requires saying "no" and this is okay! Sometimes it's not only necessary but required.

"If you're constantly running around and going in every direction trying to please everybody, you're never going to be able to focus on the important things," says Lindon.

3. Downsize Your Life: Less can absolutely be more.
When you remove all the harmful and unnecessary things from each area of your life, you have more time for all that matters most: More time, energy, money, freedom and joy.

"The bigger is better attitude really doesn't work," says Lindon.

4. Don't Waste Time on Toxic Relationships
There is a peace and freedom that comes from ditching the drain and bondage of guilt and obligation in our lives; particularly with relationships.

"It's the hardest. It's not like getting rid of a favorite pair of shoes; it's a person," says Sherry. "But sometimes it's necessary, and it clears the way for bigger and better things."

5. Teach Your Children to Declutter
When we declutter, not only do the changes positively impact our own lives, but we can pass down this joy to our children. If we equip them from the beginning, we can save them so much heartache and wasted time down the road.
