PHOENIX -- A fight between two girls that was caught on video with a cellphone camera at Akimel Middle School in Phoenix lit up YouTube.

Two teenage girls were seen punching each other as a crowd of their peers cheered them on.

Since the video first aired on 3TV last week, school officials sent a letter home to parents as a reminder of sorts.

“I definitely think there were rules that were reiterated to kids letting them know how important it is to not do these types of things and why,” said PTO co-president Janae Beckstead.

The rules are simple, students who fight on campus will face serious disciplinary actions.

Students were told not to use their cellphones to record video of fights on campus or face consequences.

“They definitely put a point on that. We're not supposed to have our cellphones at school. They are supposed to be off in your backpack,” said an eighth-grade student.

A second fight between girls was also recorded on video and uploaded to YouTube.

There were rumors a fight club was being promoted by students at the school.

Beckstead and two students 3TV spoke with denied that.

“They're not happening. This has been the first or second one this year. This is not often at all. It never happens,” said another student.

Students and staff said these fights misrepresent their school and what's going in the classroom and halls.

“I believe this was an isolated incident and they just made a bad choice," Beckstead said. "I think that they just made a bad choice and unfortunately it hurt a lot of other people as well.”

There has been a cutback on staff with budget cuts over the years, but we’re told staff is monitoring the situation.

Concerned parents are encouraged to stop by the school anytime and volunteer.
