QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. -- A storm in Queen Creek last week left a 22-year-old man badly hurt. Justin Merrick’s pelvis was shattered when a concrete and steel fence fell on top of him.

“It happened so fast, so quick, I couldn't react,” said Merrick.

Merrick was working at a golf course near the cart barn when wind speeds of 50 miles per hour knocked the fence down, pinning Merrick underneath it.

“I was in pain right away. I screamed, I yelled, I bawled, I cried,” said Merrick.

When a member of Las Colinas Golf Course saw Merrick trapped, he grabbed a jack to lift up the fence, and then put tires underneath it, taking some of the weight off Merrick’s legs.

Merrick said “That’s probably what saved me from doing more damage to my legs.”

Firefighters eventually helped free him from under the fence and he was rushed to a local hospital.

According to his dad, Merrick's been in two serious car accidents this year. “He's a very lucky young man,” said David Merrick.

Since Merrick won’t be riding in a golf cart anytime soon, his friends at the course sent him a little wooden golf cart, with get well messages. Recovery from the accident is expected to take a year.
