TONOPAH, Ariz. -- The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office took one man into custody and rescued several dogs after busting an alleged puppy mill Tuesday morning.

Search warrant in hand, deputies with the MSCO Animal Cruelty Unit responded to the home near 367th Avenue and Indian School Road at about 9:30 a.m.

"It is estimated that over 40 dogs, some show quality, are being mistreated and neglected by the owner," said Sgt. Brandon Jones in an email to the media.

Reporting from the scene, 3TV's Crystal Cruz described the smell as "horrible" and tweeted that there were 16 puppies inside the home and 25 dogs roaming the property. Several of those animals were being looking over for signs of cruelty.

In the end, MCSO seized 20 animals and the owner turned over seven more that he did not want.

According to MCSO, the suspect, identified as Mark Robinson, 48, has been cooperating with investigators. He was arrested on animal cruelty charges.

It's not yet known what led investigators to the Tonopah home nor were the conditions of the dogs immediately available.

Tonopah is about an hour west of Phoenix along Interstate 10.

Details will be updated as they develop.
