PHOENIX -- The sound of a kitten or kittens in distress is upsetting to Leah Fuller and her young daughter.

“It's crying, it sounds like it's hurt, and it's hungry,” Fuller said.

Neighbors at the San Marina apartment complex in Phoenix suspect a mother cat is inside the walls of the second story.

Tenants worry her kittens fell from the second story to the first and now they are trapped behind the wall.

A neighbor took some cellphone video capturing the sound from the desperate animals.

Tenants said the cats have been stuck for more than one week. Fuller fears the worst will happen to the animals if they aren't rescued soon.

“I don't want to see a cat die,” Fuller said.

The Arizona Humane Society sent out an animal rescuer who drilled a hole in the wall, but he was unable to reach the animals.

“What we've done is had the apartment community set a humane trap with water and kitty food," said Humane Society spokeswoman Bretta Nelson. "We are really hoping they can get out.”
