US Airways moving away from America West identity
10:51 AM Mountain Standard Time on Wednesday, January 4, 2006
The name America West is disappearing. Now known as US Airways, the newly merged airline is working to completely divest itself of everything America West. When Tempe-based America West acquired US Airways at the end of September, it decided to keep the US Airways name. Until now, however, the public hasn't seen much in the way of change with the exception of the renaming of America West Arena to US Airways Center in November. The conversion to the venu's new name was slated to officially take place shortly after the first of the year. From now on, though, change is going to be coming fast and furious as we see and hear less of the America West name. Not only are reservations agents now answering the phones "US Airways," but starting today, everything with a logo -- from ticket jackets to the napkins on the planes -- is being changed to US Airways. Changes to signage in the airline's hubs cities, Phoenix and Las Vegas, will follow. The entire fleet of America West airplanes will also be repainted in the new US Airways scheme. That will likely take until the end of the year to complete. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
