PHOENIX -- According to the Internal Revenue Service, more than 3,200 Arizonans have unclaimed IRS refunds totalling nearly $5 million. The average refund amount is about $1,500 according to an IRS spokesperson.
Every year the IRS processes millions of tax returns and issues refund checks to individuals who have overpaid their federal taxes. Sometimes those refund checks are returned to the IRS as undeliverable mail because the recepients have moved or otherwise changed addresses.
Nationally, the IRS has more than $164 million in checks for nearly 112,000 people and they're on a mission to reunite the taxpayers with they money they're owed.
“We want to make sure taxpayers get the money owed to them,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “If you think you are missing a refund, the sooner you update your address information, the quicker you can get your money.”
Taxpayers can check their own payment status at the official IRS Web site -- www.irs.gov or by calling 1-800-829-1954. We have also provided links below to the list of of Arizonan's who are currently showing up on the refund list.
