PHOENIX -- 3 On Your Side has a consumer warning for pet owners.
There's a recall for a specific type of pet food that might contain salmonella.
In a pre-emptive strike, Natura Pet Products is voluntarily recalling a specific lot of dry pet food because of potential salmonella contamination.
The products were made at a production facility during a routine two-week testing period last December. It was distributed between Dec.18, 2012, and March 15, 2013. Expiration dates range from Dec. 17, 2013, to Jan. 4, 2014.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture says a single sample tested positive for the presence of salmonella. The affected products are California Natural, Evo, Innova and Healthwise.
They are sold in bags at veterinary clinics, some pet specialty retailers, and online. If your pet has eaten the recalled food, call your veterinarian.
Besides the health risk for pets, humans run the risk from handling contaminated pet products and are urged to wash their hands.
