PHOENIX -- Jacob Harris relies on his cell phone to stay in touch with his family and friends during overseas missions for the U.S. Navy.
It’s the reason Jacob’s parents, Victor and Sunny Harris, added global service to their Verizon cell phone plan they all share when Jacob shipped out in May.
But despite signing up for global service and paying an extra $25 a month, Sunny says she started getting text messages from Verizon alerting her that their cell phone bill was spiking.
Before she knew it, Sunny says the Verizon bill topped around $5,000 while Jacob was in Oman.
“It means that since he's been deployed since May, all the money he has saved, it's gone towards Verizon bill,” Sunny said.
She says she tried explaining to Verizon wireless that her son was paying for global service, and should not have been charged.
But she says she was told Oman is not in Verizon's network, and would still have to pay.
Sunny says she convinced Verizon to credit their account back about $1,600, but their son Jacob still had to pay more than $3,000 so his phone wouldn't be disconnected.
That's when Sunny emailed 3 On Your Side.
“I told my husband, I said, ‘I'm so frustrated I don't know what to do at this point.’ He goes, ‘let’s go to news channel 3 because they always get it resolved.’”
3 On Your Side contacted Verizon and after looking into the matter for us they adjusted the bill by returning the $3,100 paid in overages.
That makes the Harris' happy. But most of all, Sunny and Victor say they're glad their son can focus on more important things.
