PHOENIX -- According to AAA Arizona, more than 701,000 Arizonans are expected to travel this weekend. That's actually a slight drop from a year ago.

But if you'll be traveling in the car you will have company. AAA says 618,000 or 88 percent of holiday travelers will drive to their destinations. That's actually up a little higher from a year ago.

The reason for that could be because we are paying lower gasoline prices. The average cost is $3.43 per gallon. A year ago we were paying $3.77.

On the flip side, 57,000 Arizonans will fly to their Memorial Day destination. That's a 6.3 percent dip from last year.

AAA attributes the decline to airline prices and for many, driving just makes better economic sense.

For savvy tech users, AAA offers a free mobile app for your smart phone. The app uses GPS navigation to help travelers plan routes, summon roadside assistance, find current gas prices in the area and a lot more information.
