PHOENIX -- We’ve talked about this issue before, but with the tax deadline days away, it's worth mentioning again.
When it comes to getting your taxes done, why shell out hundreds of dollars when you might be eligible to get your taxes done for free?
If you haven't heard, there's something called the volunteer income tax assistance program, also known as VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance).
It's geared towards taxpayers who made less than $50,000 last year. If that's you, then you qualify for the program. The tax preparers are all IRS certified and trained.
Again, if you made less than $50,000 a year, then the program allows you to get your taxes done for free.
Tamyra Spendley is the City of Phoenix community initiatives specialist.
"This is our 10th year of doing the program with the I.R.S. Over those 10 years we prepared over $49,000 returns bringing in $51 million in federal refunds, but the big thing is the savings to the community, we've saved them we figured approximately $11 million."
