PHOENIX -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced plans that will require automakers and motorcycle manufacturers to provide consumers an online tool to search any recall information through their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Starting next year, consumers will be able to go to www.safercar.gov and identify any recalls for their specific vehicle for free.

Currently, consumers are limited to general searches by vehicle make and model. However, this new method will be specifically for your car. The new feature will allow consumers to instantly determine if any action is required in order to address an uncompleted safety recall.

Some automakers already offer this feature, but those that don't have until next August to comply.
