APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. -- Jerry Mittlestaedt likes to stay on top of his bills.
"If I get a bill, I try to pay it the same day. Trust me," Mittlestaedt said.
So when Mittlestaedt received his Discover Card bill recently, he immediately sat down to pay it. He usually writes a check, but this time Mittlestaedt was pulling money from his savings account in order to pay off the credit card bill.
"I went and got a money order because my checking account was getting on the low side,” Mittlestaedt said. “So I went to Wells Fargo and got a money order."
The money order was made out to Discover Card for $600. Mittlestaedt said he mailed it along with his statement to Discover. Discover never credited his account, even though Mittlestaedt knows they received his money order.
"So, I went back to the bank and they said the check had been cashed,” he recalls.
Mittlestaedt said he contacted Discover Card several times, but no one could tell him where his $600 went.
3 On Your Side got involved and when we did, Discover Card found the missing money. In an email, a Discover Card spokesperson said Mittlestaedt's money order had an incomplete card member account number, so they didn't know where to put the money. But now that they do, they immediately credited Mittlestaedt's account.
Mittlestaedt said he is happy 3 On Your Side got involved. However, he will never use a money order to pay bills again.
Discover Card felt bad enough about the situation that they added $25 to his cash back balance, which I thought was a very nice touch. So thank you, Discover.
