PHOENIX -- They seem to come out of nowhere following a tragedy, like the Yarnell wildfire.
As a result, the Arizona Registrar of Contractors is warning folks to be cautious when approached by contractors who claim they'll be able to repair your home.
Scammers will insist on cash up front before starting any work, but what usually happens is they'll abandoned the job or do shoddy work that you won't be happy with.
The agency suggests homeowners should always check out a contractor on their website to verify they are licensed. Ask for written estimates from at least three contractors before hiring someone. Never pay in cash and avoid large upfront payments if you can and never, ever make a hurried decision.
