PHOENIX -- A woman inside a South Phoenix warehouse at first tried to duck 3 On Your Side when we showed up to ask a few questions.
Gary Harper: "What's your name?
Woman: “That's not -- I’m not the owner of this business.”
Harper: “Well, you're selling mattresses right?
Harper: “All right, what's going on with your mattresses?"
That question just might be better answered by LaChella Boson, who purchased a mattress at that warehouse recently.
"For this particular mattress it was supposed to be a deal or on sale that I got, I believe, for like $180," she told 3 On Your Side.
But just weeks after she purchased the mattress, wrapped in brown fabric, it began to sink.
"It seemed like I was sliding off the bed," Boson said.
And the problems grew worse, according to Boson.
"Tension in my shoulders, lower back," she said.
Boson felt something definitely wasn't right.
"I’m not sure if this bed is supposed to be actually doing this," she said.
And the box spring was pretty flimsy, too.
"I’m interested to know and to see exactly what's going on in this bed. I want to see it," Boson said.
Sensing a bigger problem other than just a weak mattress, we had her son cut open the mattress for a closer inspection and what we found was disgusting
All that new fabric on the outside was hiding a ratty, old, dirty mattress on the inside. And the box spring? That was old, too. Shocked and angry at what 3 On Your Side found, Boson got on the phone and called the warehouse.
"You know, I just opened this mattress and how about I found something very disgusting in here, like a dirty mattress that was covered over by some fabric," Boson said.
The woman on the other line replied, "Oh, God," and hung up.
So I went to the warehouse, where the person selling the items wasn't giving up much information about the merchandise or who was in charge.
Harper: "The mattress is a trick. It’s a trick that you guys pull on people like her. They’re used mattresses."
3 On Your Side noticed one mattress set left for sale, but on the outside of the building, no name.
As far as ownership, no one is listed with state or city records as having a business here. It’s basically just a warehouse where consumers are lured in off the street or through the Internet with cheap prices.
Harper: "Well, this is a shame you guys are doing this.”
Woman: “I don't have to tell you anything.”
Harper: “Well, you're taking the fall for somebody.”
Woman: “I'm not taking the fall.”
Harper: “Well, you're not telling me who I need to talk to”
Woman: “I don't have to tell you anything, so please leave.”
Harper: “All right, thank you very much."
