PHOENIX -- There's nothing Valley resident David Thiem enjoys more than entertaining in his backyard.

"Just this last Saturday, we had about 30 people here for smoking some brisket," he said.

But Thiem thought it was time to spruce up his party space a little.

“Over here, we were supposed to do another paver patio. It was supposed to be approximately twice the size of the eating one, and we were going to do a nice fire pit where we could set up some lounge chairs and all that," he explained.

Thiem hired contractor Phil Carver, whom he had worked with before, to remodel the backyard. He said the last project Carver did for him turned out fine.

"He did good work and he did everything he said he was going to do last time," Thiem recalled.

But after receiving $2,400 for the new project, Carver and his company, Global Turf, never returned to start the job, according to Thiem.

"I haven't really gotten any responses," Thiem said.

This isn't the first time 3 On Your Side has run into Carver.

In a recent report, we tracked him down after a homeowner complained that Carver installed defective synthetic grass, which was flaking and coming apart. He told 3 On Your Side to contact the turf manufacturer.

"I don't make it. I don’t warranty it," he explained.

Thiem saw that report and asked if 3 On Your Side could find the contractor again and inquire about that $2,400.

Carver was reached and immediately gave Thiem a cashier's check for the full amount.

"He just said, 'I got the money in my pocket,' and I said, 'OK, let's meet somewhere,' and he was where he said he was going to be," Carver said.

Carver told 3 On Your Side that he never intended to keep the money.

As for Thiem, he's glad to have his cash back.

"I just want to put a special thanks out to Gary Harper and everyone on 3 On Your Side for fulfilling everything they said they were going to do," he said.
