PHOENIX -- Police are on the hunt for a pair of female crooks caught on surveillance video inside a CVS pharmacy at 16th street and Camelback.  Police say one of them used a counterfeit credit card while an accomplice attempted to use a different card but it was declined.

So how did they do it? Police believe the pair used a hand-held skimming device to make the counterfeit card and the victim probably never had a clue his card had been duplicated

"The account victim already has his credit card, he has possession of his credit card hasn't been without his credit card, so somehow these ladies obtain the information from his credit card onto a counterfeit credit card they do this by a skimming device," said Sgt. Darren Burch with Silent Witness.

3 On Your Side has done several reports on skimmers and how they work. Typically the crooks make the skimmer out of simple electronic parts, then they attach these devices to anything from gas station readers to ATMs.

But with advances in wireless technology, crooks can steal your information with just the swipe of an electronic wand.  The skimmer captures your information and then downloads it onto a computer where the counterfeit card is made.

So how can a person make sure he or she does not become the next victim? Sgt. Burch suggests never losing sight of your credit card when using it inside a restaurant or business.

"When you go into a restaurant you may want to use cash. You may want to do some other transaction than giving somebody your credit card and having it out of your sight," Sgt. Burch advised.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for the crooks. One is described as a white female in her 20s. The other is said to be a white or Asian woman also in her 20s.

Silent witness is offering a reward up to $1,000 for information that leads to their arrest.
