APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. -- Valley retiree and military veteran Gary Canady said his life was pretty stress-free until he tried to renew the registration for his live-in motorhome.
The Arizona Motor Vehicle Division told Canady the registration would not be renewed until he paid a $500 fine for the removal of an abandoned all-terrain vehicle also registered under his name.
About a month after trying to convince the state that he has not owned the three-wheeler for years, Canady is still on the hook, state transportation officials recently decided.
Canady, who lives in Apache Junction RV Park on a small pension from the Air Force, said he sold his 1984 Honda ATV about six years ago and has not seen it since. He had listed it on Craigslist and given it to a man who showed up with cash in hand.
"He and another guy came, and they packed it up and put it in the back of the truck," Canady recalled. "I gave them a handwritten bill of sale and I thought that was the end of it."
Canady had removed the license plate from the ATV but presumed the Motor Vehicle Division tracked him down through the vehicle identification number.
State transportation officials told Canady he needed to provide proof that he sold the vehicle, which Canady said he does not have. He accepted $300 in cash from the buyer and watched the ATV be hauled away in the bed of a pickup truck.
3 On Your Side got involved and the agency said it would look into the matter.
The state asked Canady to dig up that six-year-old Craigslist ad and provide them with a letter from his landlady whom Canady said witnessed the sale.
Canady provided all the evidence he could but the agency hasn't budged.
"Unfortunately, so far, none of the documentation has been able to really support the selling of the ATV," Motor Vehicle Division spokesman Tim Tate said. "The MVD did review the documentation that he submitted and really determined that none of it meets the threshold for providing that legal evidence that he sold the vehicle."
Canady said he might take his case all the way to Sen. John McCain.
When selling a vehicle that is registered in Arizona, sellers are asked to provide the state Motor Vehicle Division with a "sold notice." The document formally notifies the state of the new owner of the vehicle and relieves the seller of responsibility.
Arizona motorists who trade their vehicles at car dealerships are also encouraged to fill out the form.
