SURPRISE, Ariz. -- A Valley contractor accused of operating without a license pleaded not guilty in Surprise City Court, and will return in a few weeks with a public defender.
Last spring, 3 on Your Side reported on a business called Sound Creations and its owner Matt Florman.
Florman allegedly agreed to install surround sound, in-house vacuum and security systems in Denis Chassot's house.
The Valley resident said he paid $3,000 for the work but Florman never completed the job.
Chassot said he found Sound Creations on Angie's List, a subscription-based website that compiles consumer reviews for local businesses.
Angie's List later looked into Florman's credentials and could not find his contracting license.
State law requires that contractors be licensed for work exceeding $1,000.
When confronted by 3 on Your Side after the court hearing, Florman said he is "not contracting."
State investigators began looking into the man after the initial 3 on Your Side report.
Florman faces charges of contracting without a license and advertising violations related to the alleged contracting problems.
A producer with 3 on Your Side also asked Florman why he accepted $3,000 from Chassot and walked off the job, and whether he would return the money. Florman remained silent.
