PHOENIX -- Bill Mellecker has quite the family tree.

"This is my son, Dylan, and my daughter, Macayla," he said as he proudly pointed out his children sitting next to him.

With two grandchildren that were recently born, the family tree just keeps on growing.

That's exactly why Mellecker's parents wanted to fly to Phoenix from Wichita, Kan. The couple had been married 57 years and flying all the way to Phoenix was supposed be kind of a mini family reunion.

"They wanted to meet their grandsons and it was going to be their last trip down due to my dad's health issues," Mellecker said.

Unfortunately, his dad's health is the very reason the couple never made it to Phoenix. Mellecker's father suffered a stroke and later died at a hospital.

The couple had already purchased tickets on Allegiant Air but never boarded the flight.

After burying Bill Mellecker Sr., the family reached out to Allegiant to see if the airline would consider refunding nearly $800 in tickets.

Allegiant said no, leaving Mellecker's mom pleading to a Wichita TV station for help. In a tearful interview, she told KAKE-TV she just wanted to have the money refunded.

"My husband just passed away and I can't use the tickets," she said.

Mellecker reiterated to 3 On Your Side that his mom has been through enough and that Allegiant should return the money.

"Why is it so difficult to refund a widow who is grieving her husband?" he asked.

3 On Your Side got involved and after dealing with Allegiant over the course of nearly a week, the airline reconsidered its original decision and refunded the woman $791 -- the total price for the two tickets.

Mellecker said he and his mom can't believe it and appreciate 3 On Your Side getting involved.

"I just want to give a special thanks to Gary Harper and the entire 3 On Your Side team," he said.

3 On Your Side would also like to thank Allegiant Air for looking into the matter and resolving it.
