PHOENIX -- A Valley man was looking for help getting a few hundred dollars back from a company, so he contacted 3 On Your Side.
Robert Young said he put $300 onto a money card when one of his children called saying they needed money.
"Parents work for their children," said Young. “My son said that he wanted to travel to Florida and he needed $300 so I said well, Wal-Mart is just around the corner.”
So, Robert went to Wal-Mart and purchased a pre-paid money card called Green Dot MoneyPak.
When you load the card with money you scratch off the back of the card to reveal numbers. Those numbers are used to basically activate the card.
But, when Robert loaded the card with $300 his code on the back was smudged rendering the card useless.
“It disappeared, it wasn’t there. The other digits were there but that one wasn't, the digit was obliterated," Young explained.
The first number is unreadable when it should have been clear. Without the entire code, Robert's $300 card was worthless.
“I immediately went to the service counters and I asked for them to refund my money," said Robert.
He couldn't believe the answer he got.
“We discussed if for a while and I could see that they were not going to refund the $300," Young stated.
Robert contacted Green Dot MoneyPak, but couldn't resolve the issue.
So he contacted 3 On Your Side.
“This is a case where for $300 I had nothing. I had a piece of paper that was worthless," Young said.
3 On Your Side contacted Green Dot MoneyPak, which indicated this was an unusual problem, but said they would send Robert a $300 check immediately.
That's good news for Robert, who said he's not quite sure he would use this method to send money again.
“No, I wouldn't do it, I'll pay the full price for the money gram before I risk the problem here," he said.
Once 3 On Your Side got involved, Green Dot MoneyPak was really quick to resolve the matter.
