WASHINGTON (AP) — Midterm elections that will decide control of the Senate are three months away. The 2016 presidential campaign starts soon after.
Yet the Republican Party still can't figure out what to do about illegal immigration.
It's the issue that vexed Republicans as much as any in their 2012 presidential loss. And it's the one problem the party declared it must resolve to win future presidential races.
But it bedeviled the GOP again last week when House Republicans stumbled for a day before passing a face-saving bill.
The fiasco proves again that a few uncompromising House conservatives can severely hamper GOP efforts to craft a coherent position on key issues.
