RYE, N.Y. (AP) — An 86-year-old landmark north of New York City where part of the movie "Big" was filmed is in trouble.
Playland is the nation's largest government-run amusement park and has been a money loser for suburban Westchester County for years. Attendance has dropped hugely in recent years, and a grand plan to revamp the park is a year behind schedule.
No one is predicting that Playland will have to close anytime soon. But Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino — now running for governor — has often said the status quo can't continue.
The renovation plan was supposed to make Playland more of a year-round destination by adding a field house and athletic fields. But it has been caught up in local politics and opposition from neighbors.
