PHOENIX -- Professional UFC Fighter Ryan Bader is used to being an underdog.

He is not used to losing.

Bader will be the underdog once again when he steps into The Octagon on Aug. 4 to face Lyoto "The Dargon" Machida at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.  At first glance it’s easy to see why Machida is the favorite.  Machida has held and defended the UFC Light Heavyweight Belt. However, on close inspection, Bader may have the upper hand.

Machida (17-3) has not been himself over the years. Since 2010, he only won one of his four fights.  He beat Randy Couture with a flying kick at UFC 129. It earned him knockout of the year.  But, along with that win, the black belt in Shotokan and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has chalked up a few loses.

Bader (14-2) is on a two-fight win streak. And, he is putting in the work. The former All-American wrestler at Arizona State University just opened Power MMA in Gilbert with a few other UFC Stars. You will find him there training constantly.

Plus, when you look at their common opponents, it’s basically a draw. Jon Jones beat ‘em both. Machida beat Tito Ortiz, who beat Bader. And, Bader’s most recent win, was over Rampage Jackson at UFC 144 in Japan. Rampage took home a win over Machida at UFC 123.

If you’re wondering, the Vegas odds-makers had Bader as the underdog in his last fight against Rampage as well. They were wrong.
