PEORIA, Ariz. - Imagine this: There is an emergency. You are rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. And, when you wake up, you find out you have just been robbed of $90,000.

That’s what police say happened to an 84-year-old woman from Sun City West.

“They are scum bags!” Joyce Cook said.

Cook isn’t holding back when referring to the person, or people who robbed her aunt.

“I can’t believe anyone would rob an old person.” Cook continued, “but, to rob a woman who is in surgery, that’s awful.”

3TV is withholding the victim’s name at the family's request. The family is worried she could again be targeted by criminals.

According to Peoria Police, Cook’s aunt fell down and broke her hip on July 28. She was visiting her doctor at 13090 N. 94th Drive in Peoria.

A witness called 911 and paramedics rushed her to Banner Boswell Hospital. After surgery, family came to see her, and quickly realized her jewelry had been stolen.

When she was taken to the hospital, she was wearing a solid gold, diamond encrusted watch. She also had two rings. One had a 9 carat diamond solitaire. The other ring was covered in a 7.9 carat diamond cluster.

Police say they have narrowed the search down to the hospital stay and the hospital is working with investigators to finalize a timetable.

The 84-year-old is not a wealthy woman. She just has a few expensive pieces of jewelry given to her years ago by her husband before he passed away.

Cook felt like the jewelry might be needed to pay for all the medical expenses that come along with rehabbing this injury.

The jewelry is very unique looking and if you see any of it, you are asked to call the Peoria Police Dept.
