YUMA, Ariz. -- Yuma Border Patrol agents seized 952 pounds of marijuana Thursday, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Authorities say several people carrying backpacks were crossing the Salinity Canal Bridge on County 14th Street, apparently heading toward a pickup truck parked nearby, when they spotted Border Patrol agents and fled toward Mexico.

The driver of the pickup truck also absconded.

Agents found 20 bundles of marijuana, weighing 509 pounds, scattered in the area. The drugs have an estimated value of $229,000.

The marijuana was reportedly seized for destruction and the pickup truck was turned over to the Yuma County Narcotics Task Force.

Agents patrolling near Wellton on Thursday found 443 pounds of marijuana in 10 makeshift backpacks. Authorities say it is worth about $199,000.

The smugglers were not located.
