YAVAPAI COUNTY, Ariz. -- A lieutenant with the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office lost his life in an automobile accident Friday.

The Department of Public Safety notified YCSO that Lt. Wayne Loughrige, 51, and his 17-year-old son Joseph Arter died in an accident on Highway 69.

DPS said Loughrige’s SUV drifted into the center median at milepost 277. Loughrige reportedly over corrected and lost control before hitting an embankment along the right side of the road.

Both Loughrige and his son were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. They were both pronounced dead on the scene.

There was no indication that speed or impairment was a factor in the accident. DPS will continue to investigate the incident.

Loughrige had been with YCSO since 1991. He and his wife tied the knot this past October.
