TEMPE, Ariz. – Police are searching for the two men who shot a woman in the parking lot of a Tempe apartment complex early Wednesday morning.

It happened just before 3 a.m. at the Southern Gardens apartments on Southern Avenue west of McClintock. Police believe this was an attempted armed robbery that took a violent turn.

The victim, a woman in her 20s, was sitting in a car, chatting with another woman when a Hispanic man and a black man approached them. At least one of those men was armed.

The victim got out of the car and confronted the men. After words were exchanged, one of them shot her in the stomach. Police say the victim's injury is minor. She is expected to recover. The other woman was not injured.

The two men fled the scene.

The Hispanic man is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, 160 pounds, with short brown hair and a round face. He is in his late 20s or early 30s, is clean-shaven and does not have an accent.

The black man is between 5 feet 7 inches and 6 feet tall. In his early 20s, he is very thin, weighing about 140 pounds, and has very dark skin and short black hair.  Police said he has an accent, but neither woman was able to place it.

Police say both men should be considered armed and dangerous.

Investigators have not determined if either woman might have seen the men before.

Police are still trying to get a description of the vehicle the men escaped in.

Residents say the neighborhood is normally fairly quiet.

"I walk with my kid, my grandkids at night, never seen anything suspicious, don't have suspicious people hanging out," Ted Gutierrez told 3TV's Tess Rafols. "But, you know, it could be any neighborhood."
