PHOENIX -- Phoenix police have taken the suspect in Tuesday night's shooting in the parking lot of ITT Technical Institute in West Phoenix into custody.

The shooting happened at around 8:15 p.m. at the school's campus near 95th Avenue and McDowell Road.

It started with an argument between the suspect, now identified as Carlos Webb, and his ex-girlfriend. Police said the couple had recently broken up.

According to Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department, Webb, 33, lifted his shirt to show his ex his gun while the two were in class. He then tried to force her outside, but she refused to go with him and was not injured.

Webb left campus only to return a short time later. At that time, he got into an argument with a woman who is a recruitment counselor for ITT.

Crump said the confrontation started inside, but witnesses saw Webb escort the 30-year-old woman away from the building. When she tried to run from him, police said Webb fired at least one shot, hitting the woman.

At last check, she was in serious condition at a local hospital.

Because classes were in session at the time of the shooting, the school immediately went into lock down.

Operating on information from witnesses who said Webb might be inside the building, tactical teams went in and evacuated about 70 students and faculty members.

Webb was not found on the campus. He remained on the loose all night.

Crump said Webb was holed up in a home in the area of 37th Street and Janice Way, which is northeast of the school -- about a 30-minute drive. Webb surrendered to tactical teams shortly before 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Detectives are now interviewing Webb about Tuesday night's incident.

The West Phoenix ITT Tech location is one of four ITT Tech campuses in Arizona.
