PHOENIX -- A woman was rescued from a north Phoenix mountain late Saturday night after having a medical issue.

Phoenix firefighters and police officers were called around 9:40 p.m. after the woman was found on a trail.

She began hiking around 3 p.m., according to Phoenix Fire Capt. Ruben Saavedra.

Specially trained rescue personnel from Phoenix, Glendale, Peoria, Daisy Mountain and Scottsdale were called to assist with the search and rescue of the woman.

Firefighters were flown to the patient by a Phoenix Police Department helicopter.

Firefighters used a big-wheel operation to get the woman down the trail. She was transported to a local hospital for further medical attention.

Saavedra says rescuing hikers at night is a high-risk operation and reminds hikers that trails are closed from dusk to dawn.
