AVONDALE, Ariz. -- A grandmother is recovering after she was pulled from a lake near McDowell Road and 107th Avenue in Avondale Saturday afternoon.

Neighbors found Manju Chopra, 59, and her 3-year-old granddaughter floating facedown in the lake and pulled them from the water, according to Avondale police.

Chopra was transported to Banner Estrella Hospital and was listed in critical condition. Her condition has since improved. She is now in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.

Hamanssh Chopra was transported to Phoenix Children's Hospital in stable condition and was admitted for observation as a precaution.

Chopra told her family that she took Hamanssha for a walk and the girl somehow fell into the lake. She said she went in after the child but could not get her footing and kept going under the water.
