GILBERT, Ariz. - A woman is behind bars after allegedly abusing her adopted 10-year-old son.

Court paperwork indicated the 10-year-old victim was physically and sexually abused by Jennifer Barnes, 39, his adoptive mother.

The victim told police Barnes put feces in his mouth and taped it shut, burned sensitive areas of his body with a lighter and curling iron, and violated him with a toothbrush.

The victim described multiple incidents of abuse so severe it caused him to bleed.

A physical exam discovered scarring consistent with the boy's account of the abuse.

Barnes told police that she was the sole caregiver during the dates of the alleged abuse. She provided inconsistent statements during the interview about the investigation.

Paperwork indicated there are prior CPS reports and investigations into Barnes.

Barnes was arrested and faces one count of child abuse and one count of sexual conduct with a minor. She is being held without bond.
