PHOENIX -- Strong winds forced a man to land his hang glider on a golf course driving range Tuesday afternoon.

Shawn Jarrell was enjoying the updrafts over north Phoenix after he launched from Shaw Butte. He said he reached close to 6,000 feet before winds took him down.

He found a patch of grass at Cave Creek Golf Course near 19th Avenue and Greenway Road in Phoenix.

"I just chose to land in here and these people were kind enough not to actually shoot off golf balls at me when I was coming in for a landing," Jarrell said. "I said, 'I'm going to land there.' They all stopped and watched me come in for a landing."

Jarrell was on a mission while he was in the air. He managed to release a friend's ashes while he was high over the Valley. His friend died of cancer and this was one of his final requests.
