MESA, Ariz. -- Police are investigating a hit-and-run after several boats at Bass Pro Shops in Mesa were damaged over the weekend.
According to Mesa police Sgt. Tony Landato, a vehicle struck several Sun Tracker pontoon boats that were on display on the west side of the property near Dobson Road and the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway.
The incident occurred at about 1 a.m. Saturday while the store was closed. An employee discovered the damaged boats at about 8:30 a.m.
"It was pretty substantial damage," Landato said. "Some of these boats were moved several feet."
Initial property damage was estimated at $100,000.
No witnesses were located.
Evidence suggests the suspect vehicle is a light-colored Ford SUV or pickup truck. Landato said a "Ford" emblem and a "Triton V10" emblem were found at the crash scene.
Landato said the suspect vehicle likely sustained heavy front-end damage. Based on debris and paint transfer at the scene, the vehicle was possibly two-toned – gray on the lower half and white on the upper half.
Landato said the vehicle lost a large amount of fluid and the fluid trail led to the Red Mountain Freeway on Dobson Road.
Police checked the freeway and nearby area, but the vehicle was not found.
