SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.-- Kathy Mendotte knows both former head coach Joe Paterno, and the man at the center of the charges - Jerry Sandusky.

Mendotte, who now lives in Scottsdale, grew up in Pennsylvania and her father was friends Sandusky.

Mendotte describes Sandusky has having a domineering presence, a big guy, who could be a little intimidating.

"He comes across as a great guy, wants to do everything for kids and that was the opinion that I got at the time," Mendotte says of Sandusky.

In the '90s she even raised and donated thousands of dollars to Sandusky's then-charity, The Second Mile.

"We did some horse shows in '98 and '99 up in State College at a horse facility and we chose certain organizations in that area that we were going to donate money."

Since then her feelings have changed.

"People have called him a monster, to me he's a sick pedophile."

Sandusky has been charged with 40 counts of sexual abuse of a minor.
