PHOENIX -- The P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘N’ roll Marathon and Half Marathon will bring some 25,000 runners and walkers, along with tens of thousands of spectators, to the Valley for the race Sunday morning.

The large crowds and road closures all around the route could mean traffic tie-ups. So you will want to be aware of the road closures in your area. Plan ahead for an alternate route or give yourself extra time to get to your destination.

Most road closures and detours will be in effect between the hours of 6 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. According to the Marathon officials, at 6 a.m., police and event personnel may implement a soft closure along the entire race course. Streets will reopen on a rolling basis as soon as the last participant has passed and all course support materials have been removed. Streets along the earlier miles of the route will open earlier than roads along the end of the route.

The Bike Tour will begin at 7:15 a.m. and all other races at 7:50 a.m. The Bike Tour will start in downtown Phoenix and follow approximately 20 miles of the Marathon course. The Mini Marathon will start at 7:50 a.m. with the Half Marathon on Mill Avenue, follow the same course for two miles and turn into the finish on the Tempe Lake Path. All events will finish near Sun Devil Stadium on the ASU campus.

The Arizona Department of Transporation says road closures will also affect some freeway on- and off-ramps. You’ll want to make a note of these restrictions from ADOT:

*Westbound Interstate 10 off-ramp at Seventh Avenue closed from 4 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Sunday (Jan. 20) for marathon. Eastbound I-10 off-ramp at Seventh Avenue limited to southbound turns during same hours.

*Westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) off-ramp at Van Buren Street closed from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. Eastbound Loop 202 off-ramp and westbound on-ramp at McClintock Drive closed from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

*Both Loop 202 off-ramps at Scottsdale Road restricted to northbound traffic from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Southbound Scottsdale Road limited to event traffic only.
