TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Federal prosecutors are opposing ex-U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi's request to remain out of prison while he appeals his convictions on public corruption and money laundering charges.

Renzi was to have begun serving his three-year prison sentence earlier this month but its start was temporarily delayed pending court action on his request.

The trial judge in the case rejected Renzi's bail request. The judge ruled that Renzi hadn't raised a substantial question of law or fact likely to result in a reversal of his convictions or a new trial.

Renzi is appealing that ruling to the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, and federal prosecutors are urging the appellate judges to also turn down Renzi.

Renzi represented Arizona's 1st Congressional District from early 2003 until early 2009.
