PAGE, Ariz. (AP) -- A bypass route to US 89 in northern Arizona now is open, day and night.
The state Department of Transportation paved Navajo Route 20 between The Gap and Page after a portion of US 89 south of Page buckled earlier this year.
The bypass route, relabeled as US 89T, has been open to traffic during the day since late August.
With fencing complete to prevent livestock from crossing the road, it now is open to non-residential traffic at night.
Drivers headed to Page previously had to take a 115-mile-long detour along US 160 and SR 98.
The Transportation Department plans to start construction to repair US 89 by the middle of next year at a cost of $40 million.
