GILBERT, Ariz. -- Two new dogs are joining the Gilbert Police Department, bringing their crime-fighting skills and police bloodline in to replace a pair of retiring canines.
Lenz and Bono arrived from training in Holland approximately a month ago, according to a Gilbert police release. The newest members of the K-9 Unit are brothers, from the same litter, and will be joining their older brother Murphy in helping Gilbert police.
Officer Justin Betts, who will be working with Lenz, said in the release that having three dogs from the same line and litter is a rare feat in police canine units. He also said that Lenz is doing a good job getting adjusted to Arizona's heat.
Bono will be working with Officer Greg Thomas, who has been with the K-9 Unit for 18 years. In addition to working together, Bono and Lenz will be living with Thomas and Betts, respectively, while they're off the clock.
Chucky and Zorro will be retiring from the K-9 Unit to make room for the two newcomers. The two retiring dogs will be recognized for their service at a Gilbert Town Council meeting.
