PHOENIX -- Police and school officials are investigating a threatening note found in a bathroom at a Phoenix high school.

The note reportedly threatened violence at the school Friday.

Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said the school resource officer for Carl Hayden Community High School, which is near 35th Avenue and Roosevelt Street, learned about the note on Tuesday.

Police said the threat specified the type of violence but they have not released further details.

According to student Jesus Castellonos, the threat involved guns being brought to school.

"Some people are saying that they're not going to come on this Friday because they are really afraid about that," he said.

Martos said the police department will have an increased presence at the school.

Police said they are trying to determine how many people are behind the threat.

Phoenix Union High School District spokesman Craig Pletenik said that while the district was aware of the threat Tuesday, school officials planned to send a letter home Thursday after conducting a thorough investigation.

"We always use our professional judgment before we notify parents so that we can give the most recent and accurate information to ensure a safe and orderly climate for instruction at schools," Pletenik said in an email.

School is scheduled to continue Friday but students will not be allowed to bring backpacks.

Letter sent home to parents:

February 13, 2014

Dear Parent/Guardian,

This letter is to inform you that Carl Hayden High School received a threat for Friday, February 14th. We believe it is important to inform parents about any event that might impact our campus and our students.

We take any threat very seriously. Phoenix Union and Carl Hayden administration have been working with authorities to investigate the threat. While threats are most often hoaxes, they are none-the-less disruptive to the education of our children and their feelings of security on campus. We encourage you as parents and as community members to report any suspicious activity or share any information that may aid us in this investigation.

Despite the rumors or what your student may have reported, classes will be held as scheduled. We will have increased security measures in place. One of those measures is that students will not be allowed to bring backpacks or any large bags to school on Friday.

Our number one priority at Carl Hayden is to provide a safe and secure learning environment for our students and staff, and we will always act in the interest of caution. If you have any comments or questions regarding this situation, please contact me at 764-3035.

Sincerely,

Ricardo Cordova
Principal, Carl Hayden High School
