TEMPE, Ariz. -- Police are searching for the suspect in a hit-and-run collision involving a skateboarder.

It happened about 3:30 p.m. Friday at University Drive and Ash Avenue.

Police said a 24-year-old man was riding his skateboard south on Ash Avenue and tried to cross University Drive when he was struck by a westbound SUV.

The skateboarder was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said the SUV, described as a silver or gray Nissan X-Terra, fled south into an adjacent neighborhood. It was last seen traveling south at a high speed on or near Farmer Avenue from University Drive.

The driver is described as a white man in his early 20s with bushy brown shoulder-length hair. A comb or pick was seen sticking out of his hair at the time of the crash.

Police believe there was also a passenger in the SUV, who was described as a white man.

The intersection was closed initially and later restricted as police investigated the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Tempe Police Department at 480-350-8311 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
