TEMPE, Ariz. -- Police are searching for the suspect in a hit-and-run collision involving a skateboarder.
It happened about 3:30 p.m. Friday at University Drive and Ash Avenue.
Police said a 24-year-old man was riding his skateboard south on Ash Avenue and tried to cross University Drive when he was struck by a westbound SUV.
The skateboarder was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police said the SUV, described as a silver or gray Nissan X-Terra, fled south into an adjacent neighborhood. It was last seen traveling south at a high speed on or near Farmer Avenue from University Drive.
The driver is described as a white man in his early 20s with bushy brown shoulder-length hair. A comb or pick was seen sticking out of his hair at the time of the crash.
Police believe there was also a passenger in the SUV, who was described as a white man.
The intersection was closed initially and later restricted as police investigated the collision.
