PHOENIX – A man whose girlfriend's naked body was found dumped on a Tempe road has been sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Douglas Ray George, 26, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in February and was sentenced Friday morning.
Annovedwin Begay-Barakzai's body, 23, was found in the area of McClintock Drive and Baseline Road in June 2013.
The body wasn't identified for weeks. Police released a composite sketch of the victim and received information from the public that helped identify her.
Investigators believe Begay-Barakzai was killed at a different location than where her body was found by a passerby.
Police said Begay-Barakzai had fractured ribs, a lacerated liver and numerous stab wounds to her face and chest.
An autopsy determined Begay-Barakzai died from blunt force trauma and the stab wounds were superficial.
Police said George and Begay-Barakzai lived together in Tempe.
