TEMPE, Ariz. -- A Tempe man is accused of choking his nephew during an argument in their home Friday night.

Garrett Lee Wright, 48, faces one count of aggravated assault and one count of child abuse.

Police said Wright is the child's legal guardian and was upset about his poor school grades.

According to court documents, the boy told a friend that Wright slapped, punched and choked him to the point that he could not breathe.

The friend told police about the incident and officers went to the home. They said they noticed red marks on the boy's neck, shoulder, eyebrow and arm.

The boy told the officers that his uncle squeezed his neck with both hands.

The victim is now in the care of Child Protective Services.
