MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. -- Two teens had to be rescued from the White Tank Mountains on Thursday after getting lost while hiking.

Three teens set out on an 8-mile hike around 6 a.m. Thursday, but they did not get too far.

"They were probably lost within two hours from the time they left their vehicle," MCSO Deputy Jesse Robinson said.

By that time, they had already run out of water and it was only getting hotter.

Dazed and dehydrated, the teens found themselves in even more trouble while trying to make their way back to the trail.

"They ran into a herd of wild animals, which was javelina," said Robinson.

At that point, the teens became separated.

One of them was able to find the trail again and hike out. He then called for help.

"The other two went down the canyon instead of up the canyon and they didn't make it back to the trail," Robinson said.

They did have cellphones on them. Robinson said he had them call 911 so MCSO could get their GPS location and guide the helicopter to them.

The teens were able to wave down the chopper.

"The observer on the helicopter hiked down to where the subjects were at, hydrated them, gave them some water, and then was able to hike them back up to the helicopter," Robinson said.

Each teen had to be flown out individually. The two 16-year-olds looked a bit shaken up, but both of them were OK.

MCSO said given the triple-digit temperatures and situation the group was in, those teens were very lucky.

"I recommend that you be experienced before you come out and venture these trails, especially in the summertime," he said.

Of course, if you are planning to do any hiking in the summer, it is best to do it early and be prepared. Bring enough water with you for the duration of the hike.

Robinson said its also a good idea to hydrate a couple of days in advance of the hike.
