PEORIA, Ariz. -- A man has died after being pulled from the water at Lake Pleasant Sunday afternoon, according to Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Chris Hegstrom.

Nelson Gomez Rivas, 38, was reportedly swimming across Scorpion Bay when he went underwater.

Witnesses said they realized what happened after they heard his 2-year-old daughter screaming. The sheriff's office was called about 1:30 p.m.

It is estimated he was underwater for five to 15 minutes.

"He attempted to swim across the cove, started struggling about halfway through, and that's when the wife asked other people that were on the shoreline to assist," said sheriff's Sgt. Brandon Uptin.

Witnesses pulled the man out of the water and gave him CPR. Robert Garcia said he and another person took over for two people who appeared to be getting tired.

"I was just sitting here enjoying the day, just looking out on the lake, and we both noticed someone getting pulled out of the water, so we both just kind of rushed over and asked what we could do," he said.

The man was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
