PHOENIX -- It was a scary day for some shoppers as police swarmed a vehicle at the gas pumps outside of the Fry’s grocery stores near Bell Road and 27th Avenue.

"Goodness gracious," said shopper Sue Swanson.

Police said they were in the process of towing a vehicle for a traffic related matter when they saw something suspicious inside.

"Oh my gosh. That's crazy," said shopper Nicole Dyke.

Police evacuated the area and the bomb squad was called in to investigate.

The area was taped off as police looked in the vehicle.

The bomb squad then removed a device that appeared to be a pipe bomb. The device was detonated and it was determined that it was not explosive.

"That's pretty comforting the fact that they're being vigilant and doing their job," said shopper Eric Dyke.

Shoppers were relieved to know it wasn't an explosive device.

Police said no arrests have been made.
