PHOENIX -- Police are searching for the suspect in an early morning shooting involving an off-duty deputy with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

It happened in the area of 35th Avenue and Yorkshire Drive, which is north of Union Hills Drive, just after 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Deputy Tom Beckley, a six-year veteran of MCSO, was on his way home from work with his uncle when he spotted what he thought was a suspicious vehicle.

According to Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson, a pickup truck was parked facing the wrong direction in front of Beckley's uncle's home. The driver took off as Beckley drove past. That action seemed off to Beckley, which is why he turned around and followed the vehicle.

Beckley lost sight of the truck when the driver went behind a church.

"It then came back out on the street and began to follow the victims," Thompson said in a news release. "...[T]he truck passed the victims' car and the unidentified driver of the truck, fired out the passenger's window at the victims. The bullet shattered the driver's window."

Initial reports were that Beckley was injured by glass from the shattered window, but now investigators believe the bullet might have actually hit him. Beckley's uncle was not injured.

The suspect fled the scene.

Police set up a perimeter and searched for the suspect, but came up empty. While they do not have a description of the suspect, they do have some details about his pickup truck.

According to Thompson, it's a white Chevy regular-cab truck with whitewall tires and 22-inch chrome wheels. The pickup had an Arizona license plate, number AVJ5168.

Anyone with information concerning this incident or knows the suspect, his whereabouts, or the location of the vehicle is encouraged to contact the Phoenix Police Department Violent Crimes Bureau at 602-262-6141 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or 480-TESTIGO for Spanish.
